This book makes no sense

"I had filled up the bottle from the tar-water jug. I knew he would be worse by-and-by. I moved the table, like a medium of the present day, by the vigour of my unseen hold upon it." P. 27

Why do they have tar in their house? What does the part about moving the table mean?  Was he shaking in fear?

  1. Tar was a drink they had in the Victorian times. He was moving the table because he was shaking in fear that his sister might find that the pie and other things he stole were missing.
